Crescent on revenge mission against PBC

Crescent College Comprehensive hope their recent junior success can translate into rewards at senior level when they face PBC Cork in today’s Avonmore Milk Munster Senior Schools Cup quarter-final at Musgrave Park (3pm).

Having won the last two junior cups, the Limerick school are now seeking to end a 17-year senior cup drought. Their first task is to topple Cork powerhouse Pres, who are locked with rivals CBC at the top of the roll of honour on 28 titles and have contested the last three finals.

Ireland U18 fly-half Gearóid Lyons makes Crescent tick while other stars include number eight Jack Dineen and wing Greg O’Shea, sons of coaches Len Dineen and Niall O’Shea respectively. Pres saw off Crescent in the 2011 semi-final and have six players returning from last March’s 9-3 final defeat by Rockwell. The back row unit of Paul Derham, Will Foley — who played at hooker last term — and skipper John Fitzgerald provide the know-how up front, with Seamus Glynn, Rory Scannell and Steve Dinan the men to watch behind.

CBC Cork will be hoping the 103rd incarnation of this tournament will see them pull away at the top of the roll of honour, starting with a clash against Árdscoil Rís, currently down for decision at Temple Hill today (3pm).

Coach Peter Melia has had a few tough selection calls to make, particularly at scrum-half where Charlie O’Regan has got the nod ahead of Ireland U18 Schools representative Ryan Foley.

David O’Riordan skippers the side from out-half while versatile Ireland U18s front-rower Charlie Slowey leads the charge up top, with Munster U18 experience in other key areas coming from prop Rory Bourke and second-row Darragh Moloney.

Ardscoil Rís head into the tie knowing major improvement is needed from their qualifier a fortnight ago, where only a last-gasp Robbie Deegan try put away a resolute Midleton College effort. Deegan and his namesake Robbie Burke at out-half are the key players behind the pack while skipper Ciaran Power, Conor Glynn and Patrick Kearns are the go-to players in the pack.
