Seven successful kicks from seven – six of them penalties and one to convert his own second-half try represented an ideal resumption of kicking duties having let Isa Nacewa continue against Racing Metro last week as he made his first start since being struck with a quadriceps muscle injury last month.

Leinster head coach Joe Schmidt had jokingly complained the fly-half had been pestering him to recommission his kicking boots but Sexton admitted he was grateful to have been given an extra week’s rehabilitation.
