The versatile Irish back has spent nine frustrating months kicking his heels on the sidelines after suffering knee ligament damage during last November’s test against Australia at Croke Park.

“Luke was probably ready to play about six months ago,” said Shane Jennings, who like the rest of the Irish internationals who toured New Zealand and Australia during the summer, is still some weeks away from a return to first-team action. “He’s looking very sharp in training, probably bigger and stronger than he’s ever been.
