But it was his pride which took the biggest hammering after England had been defeated 20-16 by Ireland at Twickenham and lost their chance of an Six Nations Grand Slam.

“It’s a hell of a feeling,” said Wilkinson. “I’ve not felt like this for a long time. They hurt more and more. It feels like we’ve taken a big bang.”
