But the result and its effect on the Magners League table was almost a sideshow in Dublin 4 as all eyes were on the international contenders ahead of Saturday’s visit to Twickenham.

The parallels were obvious in the game’s aftermath. In the positive corner, grabbing all the headlines, was 22-point Jonny Sexton after his assured performance which he capped with a late try. The out-half did all required of him to lay down his claim for a starting spot against England, all that he can do now is continue that form into the week’s training.
