Arron Carroll’s first-half try against the wind was the foundation stone for the Old Crescent win — and sucked the wind out of the losers’ sails.
‘Well coach Victor Nelson admitted the concession of that touchdown was the game’s turning point.
“We had opportunities but we made it hard for ourselves; that first-half try was a big blow and we just didn’t recover from that. We were playing against a strong wind in the second half and made a couple of mistakes that made it that bit easier for them,” said Nelson.
Old Crescent coach John Broderick agreed: “Our two tries weren’t so much created as brought about by their mistakes. They were both breakaway scores that came when their moves broke down.
“It was a tougher game than the scoreline suggested; Sunday’s Well certainly gave it everything right through the game and it showed that there’s still a lot of life in teams when they’re competing in the Munster Cup,” he said.
Broderick paid special mention of veteran prop forward PJ McLoughlin. The 39-year-old made a significant contribution to his side’s scrummaging when he came on as a second-half replacement.
Both of Old Crescent’s tries came from Carroll, while Brian O’Shea completed the scoring with two penalties and two conversions.
Sunday’s Well now turn their focus to the All-Ireland League where they lie second from bottom of Division Three.
Said Nelson: “We are just one point short of four other teams that are in front of us, so I’m fairly positive that we can turn things around. Our next game is away to Corinthians and we have a couple of friendly fixtures arranged in the build-up to that. Then we take on Carlow and Naas and that pre-Christmas period will be very important in the overall context of the league.”
The Dolphin-Bruff game, scheduled for Musgrave Park, was postponed, and the fourth quarter-final between Cork Constitution and University College Cork is due to be played next weekend.
