Instead the most sought-after signature in world rugby will play for Perpignan, who emerged from left field to secure the services of the best number 10 on the planet, in a deal worth a reputed €950,000.

Carter opted to move to the Catalan club due to their involvement in the Heineken Cup and the All Black flyhalf should be available for selection in rounds five and six of their Pool 3 campaign.
