Reds eye new talent

DECLAN KIDNEY’S replacement as Munster coach may have big boots to fill, but at least he will do so with a full deck to choose from.

Reds eye new talent

Moves are already afoot to strengthen the squad, with Munster chief executive Garrett Fitzgerald confirming the European champions are pursuing at least one new target.

Branch management will quickly turn their attentions this week to filling the key posts vacated by Kidney, forwards coach Jim Williams, and potentially, other members of their backroom team, like fitness coach Paul Darbyshire.

Munster hope to have the new coach in place within weeks, with one of Kidney’s assistants, Tony McGahan, a strong favourite for the post.

Veteran prop John Hayes and Heineken Cup final man of the match Alan Quinlan have both been tied down for 2009 while Donncha O’Callaghan and Donncha Ryan have resisted overtures from abroad to reaffirm their commitment to Munster.

Back-up Kiwi out-half Jeremy Manning is also planning to remain with the province, despite previous indications that he was to return to his native New Zealand.
