Gaffney tipped for Irish return in new backs coach role

The Saracens head coach, who spent five years in Ireland between Leinster and Munster, is tipped to be appointed as Ireland’s new backs coach, possibly starting on Ireland’s tour to New Zealand and Australia in June. He is contracted to Saracens for another two seasons, but only as a part-time coach from May, when former Wallaby coach Eddie Jones takes over as director of rugby.

An IRFU source suggested on Saturday Gaffney would be high on any list of potential candidates. Gaffney was a popular coach in his time in Ireland, and could slot into the position quickly.
