IRFU chief executive, Philip Browne has defended Eddie O’Sullivan’s role as Ireland head coach, saying it will not be diluted by the appointment of a team manager and a dedicated backs coach.

Speaking on Morning Ireland yesterday, Mr Browne acknowledged O’Sullivan had “maybe taken on too much in terms of his role up to date” and that the head coach — who was offered a four-year extension by Mr Browne before the World Cup in France — would welcome the support of additional support staff.

“I think what it’s doing is strengthening the whole management team,” said Mr Browne. “I think there’s an acceptance by the coach that he has maybe taken on too much in terms of his role up to date. It’s a lonely position at the top of any large group of people, particularly in a sporting context.
