Abendanon drafted in to cover for injured Lewsey
Abendanon flew out to Paris last night to join the England squad just five days before they tackle South Africa in the World Cup final.
Lewsey was ruled out of the final yesterday after a scan confirmed he suffered a hamstring strain in England’s 14-9 victory over France last weekend.
Lewsey hobbled off having given England an early lead with a try after just 80 seconds.
The Wasps winger was a key member of England’s World Cup-winning team in 2003.
Lawrence Dallaglio said his absence against South Africa would be a blow for the defending champions. “He set the tone for the game at the weekend with a great opening try and put the pressure on France for the rest of the match.
“It will be a blow for him but one man’s disappointment will be an opportunity for someone else.”
Lewsey’s likely replacement in the starting XV would either be Mark Cueto or centre Mathew Tait, who finished the semi-final playing on the wing with Dan Hipkiss at outside centre.
