IT TOOK a surging second-half performance for Belvedere College to overcome St Andrew’s College 25-13 in the Powerade Leinster Schools Senior Cup first round at Templeville Road yesterday.

Austin Woodroofe’s expertly taken first-half try smartened Belvo’ up before out-half John Moriarty and hooker Tom Sexton pierced St Andrew’s defence to secure a hard fought win.

St Mary’s College needed two late tries from scrum-half Paul Early and flanker Shane Timmons to get the better of CUS 25-14 at Stradbrook.

CBC Monkstown squeezed past Templeogue College 10-3 when openside James Rogers made the line in the 63rd minute to follow wing David Finnegan’s opener. The losers out-half Ian McCormack had a penalty to put the outcome in doubt until the finish.
