MUSGRAVE Park in Cork is the latest rugby ground set for a major revamp after planning permission was granted for a new stand with capacity for almost 5,000 extra fans.

Cork City Council gave the news to the Irish Rugby Football Union’s Munster Branch on Monday, just hours after Limerick City Council cleared a redevelopment of Thomond Park sought by the same body.

While the Musgrave Park project will not match its Limerick counterpart — the refurbished Thomond Park will have room for 29,000 people — it should provide an improved alternative venue for the Heineken Cup champions, with capacity set to increase from 7,500 to more than 12,300.
