Exams clash with rugby final

APPEALS from rugby-mad students at the University of Limerick to adjourn exams for a few hours on May 20 to allow them see the Heineken European Cup final have been turned down by the college.

More than 1,000 students at UL will be sitting exams while the game is taking place.

Students at Cork Institute of Technology are set to face the same problem, with 800 students scheduled to sit exams as Munster take on Biarritz.

The UL exams commence on May 15 and run until May 28, so the exams on May 20 are right in the middle of a packed two-week schedule.

On May 20, there is a full day of three sessions of exams, commencing at 9.00am, 12.30pm and 4.00pm.

A spokeswoman for UL said yesterday: “There will be approximately 1,050 students taking exams at 4pm, which will be the exam time that will cause most students to miss the match. These students are across all disciplines in UL.”

And the college said it cannot rearrange the exam schedule at this stage to enable students see the game on television.

She said the exam timetable in UL is constructed in such a manner so to avoid students having to sit two exams on one day or complete back-to-back exams.

There have been some requests from students to change the 4pm exam time on May 20.

However, other students have requested that no change be made, because of their existing holiday plans.
