Ford to quit Irish post for Saracens

IRELAND defensive coach Mike Ford is quitting the national side to join English club side Saracens.

Ford, who joined the Irish team set-up in January 2002, will end his contract after the Permanent TSB November International series.

The IRFU are commencing a recruitment campaign to appoint a successor to the former Wigan, Castleford and Warrington rugby league player.

“Since joining the Irish squad, Mike has been an asset to the team,” coach Eddie O’Sullivan said.

“He has been thoroughly professional in his coaching and has contributed enormously to the recent success of the Irish team, in which its defensive record has continually improved. I wish him the very best in his new position.”

Ford was linked with a move to Saracens last year but was persuaded to remain with the Ireland set-up.
