A quarter of an hour into the game and Shannon found themselves 10-0 behind, with their scrum-half in the bin and not looking like their minds were on the task at hand. However, they slowly got into the game and two superb tries, one in each half - coupled with two more disallowed tries - tells the story of a game which provided top-class entertainment for the small crowd in attendance.
UL Bohemians opened brightly, and showed scant respect for their much-vaunted opponents with a terrific opening try. Combining well in midfield, they opened up the Shannon defence to send centre Colman Finn over, and Ben Martin converted. Martin later added a penalty, but that was as good as it got for UL Bohemians.
It wasn’t until the 20th minute that Shannon got off the mark with a penalty in front of the posts while Fiach O’Loughlin was in the sin-bin. They added a further three points just as O’Loughlin returned to the action, to bring the score to 10-6. Shannon then went ahead with the first of their two tries in the 35th minute, when John Lacey squeezed in at the corner. David Delaney was successful with the difficult conversion attempt, and it was 13-10 to Shannon at the break.
The teams then swapped penalties to bring it to 16-13 before Shannon winger Dan O’Donovan got his name on the score sheet mid-way through the second-half when he kicked a penalty from a metre inside his own half. That made it 19-13, and before UL/Bohs got a hand to the ball again, that lead was stretched to 13 points and victory was effectively sealed.
From the kick-off, Shannon gathered and mauled up-field. As the pack broke up, out popped Tony Buckley, who had replaced Gary MacNamara at half-time, and he gained a further 20 metres before popping to Colm McMahon close to the right touchline. McMahon raced the remaining 25 metres to the line untouched. The conversion made it 26-13 and Shannon heaved a collective sigh of relief.
