IT was the summer of 1994 and the Irish Universities were touring South Africa, one of the first parties to do so after Nelson Mandela was elected president.

Returning from training one sunny morning in Cape Town, the players from Trinity, UCC, UCD and UCG failed to notice that their Belfast brethren from Queens had gathered as a pack at the front of the bus.

As we stopped outside the hotel, the Queens' lads filed off, led by tour captain David Humphreys and his first lieutenant Gary Longwell.
