Kirwan backs Ireland to claim Triple Crown

ITALIAN coach John Kirwan yesterday backed Ireland to win the Triple Crown at Lansdowne Road.

“I think Ireland is the better balanced team, more powerful and more skilful but the Six Nations has a habit of throwing up unusual results,” the Kiwi said.

“The Scottish pack is fairly aggressive and have a particularly good hooker in Gordon Bullock, a decent second row and a fairly good back row as well. I can’t think, though, that this will pose a threat to Ireland, who are more physical up front. The Irish pack is, arguably, the best in the championship, after matching France, beating England, Wales and us.

“We were disappointed at the outcome of the game in Lansdowne Road, disappointed about decisions that went against us but the better team one.

“Behind the scrum, Ireland can offer class players like O’Driscoll, D’Arcy and Geordan Murphy. Those guys, combined with a quality half-back pairing, can produce the goods once Ireland can get on top up front.

“Scotland will want to spring a surprise but I feel Ireland are too professional and skilful to allow that to take place. Right now, they’re up there with the best in the world and Scotland aren’t.”
