Hastings: jury out on Williams

SCOTLAND great Scott Hastings is yet to be convinced Matt Williams is the man to advance the national team.

The Australian, who became the country’s first foreign coach in June 2003, won his first Six Nations Championship match in eight attempts - against Italy at Murrayfield on Saturday - to give him some respite from criticism. But former Lions star Hastings, who won 65 caps at centre for Scotland, still does not think the coach is getting the best out of his players.

“What I have said all along is that Matt is given a fair chance. But I know the first thing for a coach is to get the best out of the players, and I don’t think that has happened. I still don’t think the top players and experienced players are performing as well as they should be,” he said.
