‘World-class’ training centre targets rugby teams from across Europe

Limerick Conference and Sports Park at the University of Limerick is being promoted as a world-class rugby training venue.

A new marketing campaign aims to promote UL’s sports and accommodation facilities to leading international and national rugby teams.

Regular visiting teams include the Irish rugby squad, Munster, London Irish, Newcastle Falcons, London Wasps, Sale Sharks and the Italian rugby squad.

Teams can benefit from a multitude of facilities available at the University Arena, the largest indoor sports facility in Ireland.

These include Ireland’s first Olympic-sized (50m) pool, the National Strength and Conditioning Centre, a suspended jogging track and sprint track, 40 acres of outdoor pitches, an international athletics arena, an all-weather pitch and the National Coaching and Training Centre.

Teams can be accommodated in a purpose-built residential village within the Sports Park at UL.

Expert dieticians and catering facilities provide teams with performance enhancing meals.

UL President Professor Roger Downer said: “This is a very positive initiative which will attract internationally renowned rugby teams to train in Ireland. The presence of visiting teams at all levels of development will provide opportunity for local sides to be exposed to a diversity of talents and, thereby, to broaden their playing and coaching experience. The overall result will be positive for Irish rugby.”

Munster Rugby chief executive Garret Fitzgerald said UL’s sports training facilities are world class.

He said: “The choice of sports facilities combined with the expertise of highly qualified sports and sports science staff ensure that the teams and clubs who use the facilities gain maximum benefit from their training. We have seen the direct benefit of training at this facility with the Munster team, with every essential element of training and rehabilitation of players being met with professionalism and expertise.”

A promotional package is now being sent to rugby teams all over Europe.
