All-weather action to fill Wednesday afternoon, and the nap goes to Daler who can finally put a winning mark on his card by taking the first division of the Halloween Mid-term Racing At Dundalk Stadium Handicap.
Ger Lyons’ 72-rated three-year-old has had nine goes thus far, including two at this venue, and has finished third on five of those occasions. Last time out, in a maiden in Cork, he was a shade out of his depth but there was much to be taken from how he kept plugging away to finish a decent fifth despite not being able to land a telling blow.
When last at Dundalk, he finished third behind Bishopton, who followed up at Down Royal. He was well beaten that day but, as is his wont, he was slow to settle into a rhythm and facing an uphill battle throughout. However, he made good progress in the closing stages and as that was over seven furlongs, he should be better back over a mile at this track.
He has also been gelded since his last outing and if that has the desired effect on his first run in seven weeks, he will take a great deal of beating in what is a winnable race. Burford Beauty and Imperial Fighter can give him most to think about.
In the second division of the same handicap, Sierra De Gredos can get back to winning ways. Andy Oliver’s four-year-old gelding was a winner here in September and, off a 6lb higher mark, he finished a close second behind Punk Poet.
He filled that same spot on his most recent outing, which was over a shorter trip, but back to a mile, he can continue his steady progress by putting a second all-weather win and fourth career victory on his card.
Oiche Rua was a couple of places behind the selection last time and the way she finished suggested a longer trip, such as this, would help. Given the selection had done much more early in that race, it is likely there was more between the two than the final margin might suggest, but she is respected, nonetheless. Auburn Avenue and Late Night Talking are also worth considering as each-way options.
