A turnout of just three was a disappointment for Thursday’s feature in Clonmel but the race itself, the Grade Three Surehaul Mercedes-Benz Novice Hurdle, provided a thrilling finish, in which Ballybow edged out market rival Ballygunner Castle.
The two flip-flopped in the market before the Gordon Elliott-trained Ballybow settled as market leader at a shade of odds-on, and he set out to make all the running. Sam Ewing set a modest pace aboard the recent Naas maiden winner but his jumping at the slow pace was a shade hesitant.
