Usdi Atohi springs surprise at Tipperary

DIGGING DEEP: Usdi Atohi and Gavin Ryan, left, win the Listed Coolmore Ten Sovereigns Tipperary Stakes. Picture: Healy Racing

The Listed Coolmore Ten Sovereigns Tipperary Stakes looked difficult on paper and indeed it likely eluded most punters as 20-1 second outsider of the 10-runner field, Usdi Atohi, trained by Donnacha O’Brien and ridden by Gavin Ryan, came out on top in an exciting finish.

Shamrock Breeze made much of the running, with the eventual winner on her shoulder, and the remainder of the field not too far off the pace. When Powerful Nation emerged from the pack as a threat, he looked likely to prevail, but fittingly, Usdi Atohi, who is a daughter of Ten Sovereigns, stuck her neck out to edge out that rival, with Shamrock Breeze hanging on to third place.
