Galopin Des Champs shows his class in Savills Chase romp

THAT'S MY BOY: Groom Adam Connolly and Paul Townend celebrates on Galopin Des Champs after victory in the Savills Steeplechase (Grade 1) at Leopardstown.

REPORTS of Galopin Des Champs’ demise were greatly exaggerated. The Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, eclipsed on his comeback in the John Durkan Memorial, returned to his imperious best in Thursday's Grade One Savills Chase at Leopardstown as he delivered a performance for the ages for trainer Willie Mullins, rider Paul Townend and owner Audrey Turley.

Never worse than second place as last year’s winner, Conflated, set the pace, Paul Townend, aboard the winner, chose to steer a wide course throughout. Market rival Gerri Colombe was also tucked in just behind and held every chance, but when push came to shove, the response of Galopin Des Champs was quite remarkable.
