Under a strong ride by Torrens, the 9-1 chance, who was also quite well backed, dug in deep and, in a pulsating finish, the J. P. McManus-owned gelding put his head in front for the narrowest of successes.

A thrilling climax to the Paddy Power Cork Grand National resulted in a popular local success as the Robert Tyner-trained Sir Bob showed terrific battling qualities to foil a huge gamble on Call The Tune.

Over the stamina-sapping three-and-a-half-mile trip, the 11-year-old needed Simon Torrens’ encouragement to stay in touch while, in complete contrast, Call The Tune, who was backed from 7-1 to 5-2, travelled kindly in the hands of Michael O’Sullivan.
