O'Brien outlines Champion options

Aidan O’Brien reports the Red Mills Irish Champion Stakes as “definitely a possibility” for Declaration Of War following his heroics at York on Wednesday.

The four-year-old has had a busy summer since his victory in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, running well in defeat in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown, the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville.

He got back on the winning trail with a smart display in the Juddmonte International earlier this week and O’Brien could not be happier with his colt’s condition in the aftermath.

Speaking at the Curragh on Saturday, the trainer said: “He’s very good, he lost no weight and he’s a big, hardy horse.”

When asked about a trip to Leopardstown for the Irish Champion Stakes on September 7, the master of Ballydoyle said: “It’s definitely a possibility if the ground stays fast.”

Declaration Of War is not the only Ballydoyle contender for the Irish Champion, however.

O’Brien said: “They are all there, Ruler Of The World, Kingsbarns, Camelot and Magician. They have all had their midsummer break and they are all possibilities (for Leopardstown).”
