Kempton hoping for Kauto return

Kempton clerk of the course Barney Clifford admits it would be “exceptional” to see Kauto Star bid for a sixth victory in the William Hill King George VI Chase.

This time last year the same questions were being asked regarding whether the incredible chaser should be retired, but he silenced any doubters with an awesome comeback performance in the Betfair Chase at Haydock.

The 12-year-old then brought the house down at Kempton Park as he landed the festive highlight for the fifth time, before being pulled up with over a circuit to run in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, having suffered a schooling accident during his preparation.

Kauto Star certainly looked in rude health as he was paraded at Paul Nicholls’ owners open day on Sunday, at which the champion trainer revealed one final crack at the King George would be considered if the legendary gelding pleased in his homework.

Considering it seems likely the Grade One contest would be the final target of his glittering career, the excitement and emotion generated on Boxing Day would be something to savour if he does make the trip.

Clifford said: “It would be really exceptional to see him targeted at the William Hill King George once again. Let’s hope all his preparation goes well, as everyone at Kempton loves him.

“If he does run, it’s going to be his first run of the season and there would be incredible excitement.

“Obviously a decision hasn’t been made yet, but I’m sure Paul and Clive (Smith, owner) will do what is right by the horse, as they always do.

“If the pictures from yesterday tell the story, he looks absolutely fantastic. If he returns to Kempton to bid for a sixth King George, it would be brilliant news for everyone.”
