O'Connor claims medal for Ireland after jump-off

Cian O'Connor has won a bronze medal for Ireland after the final of the show jumping at Greenwich Park.

O'Connor had to compete in a jump-off for the silver medal with Gerco Schroeder from the Netherlands after they both scored a time penalty to incur one penalty fault and come out joint second behind Steve Guerdat of Switzerland.

The jump-off saw Schroeder clear his round in 49.79 to put the pressure on O'Connor. O'Connor was doing well in his round and had only the last to go after he looked to be ahead of Schroeder.

However, Blue Loyd 12 clipped the last fence with his hind feet to leave O'Connor agonisingly close to a silver.

It is an amazing turnaround for the Kildare man who was only allowed into the final after a Swedish rider dropped out this morning and O'Connor got in because he was the first reserve rider.
