Akeed Mofeed out of Derby

Akeed Mofeed will not be aimed at the Investec Derby at Epsom next month after meeting with another setback.

The John Oxx-trained three-year-old was due to run in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes at Leopardstown on Sunday, but has suffered a strained hock.

Akeed Mofeed will instead be prepared for the Irish 2,000 Guineas in two weeks’ time followed by the Irish Derby at the Curragh.

“He’s got a problem with his hock,” said Bruce Raymond, racing manager to owner Jaber Abdullah.

“It’s not much of a problem but he couldn’t medicate it because it’s so close to the race.

“John (Oxx) said he’d rather not go for the Derrinstown, and he’s not going to go for the Derby at Epsom without a prep race.

“His new programme will be the Irish Guineas and Irish Derby.

“The problem he had before when he missed his previous race was in front.

“This time he strained a hock when he worked well on Tuesday. It’s one of those unfortunate things.

“John waited until Friday to make up his mind and he wasn’t 100% happy with him.”
