Newcastle set to inspect

This afternoon's meeting at Newcastle is subject to a 9am inspection.

Officials at Gosforth Park called the impromptu check after overnight temperatures surprisingly dropped to -3.5C.

Racing is due to begin at 2.20pm.

Clerk of the course James Armstrong said: "It was forecast to get down to zero at the very worst.

"A lot of it (frost) is just a fine crust, but it is not in the ground too far.

"Things should warm up a great deal this morning, so I'd still be very hopeful - unless something extraordinary happens."
