Song in tune at Leicester
Sadeek's Song upstaged French Derby fourth Colombian to cause an upset in the Sir Gordon Richards Conditions Stakes at Leicester today.
Ryan Moore stood in for the injured Frankie Dettori and got a fine tune out of the Mahmood Al Zarooni-trained three-year-old.
Colombian loomed large over two furlongs out, but found disappointingly little when asked to go about his work by William Buick.
The 4-6 favourite was surprisingly outpointed by the Godolphin-owned colt, who appeared to show vastly improved form on his previous three efforts.
"We always thought he was a nice horse and it took him a long time to learn as he didn't run as a two-year-old," trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni said of the 4-1 winner.
"Ryan did the right thing on him, sitting just behind the pace, and he won it nicely.
"The plan is to take this horse to Dubai for the Carnival."
Buick went one better to bring up his 100 for the year when guiding Iron Step (10-1) home in division two of the SIS Live Handicap
Iron Step strode away willingly inside the final furlong to land his fourth win of 2011 for trainer Nicky Vaughan.
"I thought Colombian was going to take me there, but I'm very pleased Iron Step has given me my 100th winner of the year," said Buick.
Vaughan added: "He was quite a weak horse when he came in and we've panned his races out quite a bit.
"We've just taken time for him to get over his races and mature a bit."
Fergus Sweeney is just one short of 50 winners for the year after notching a 101-1 double on Uppercut and Love Tale.
The Stuart Kittow-trained Uppercut (5-1) outfought Yojimbo by a head in a tight finish to division one the SIS Live Handicap.
"He had some good form earlier in the season, but was disappointing last time as the ground was too soft for him," said Sweeney.
He made it a brace when steering Love Tale (16-1) to victory in the Haymarket Nursery to give trainer Mark Rimell his first Flat success of the year.
Sweeney, who was standing in for Dane O'Neill, made the most of his spare mount.
He brought the filly through to lead over a furlong out to beat Inniscastle Boy by a length and a quarter.
"She idled in front. I thought for a minute she wasn't going to stay, but I gave her a flick and she responded and saw the trip out well," Sweeney told At The Races.
Dakota Canyon (14-1) stepped up significantly on his racecourse debut on this track two weeks earlier to land the British Stallion Studs Supporting British Racing EBF Fosse Way Maiden Stakes for trainer Richard Fahey and jockey Tony Hamilton.
Neil Callan replaced Sam Hitchcott on the Mick Channon-owned and trained- Tinzapeas (14-1) to win the Hoby Maiden Auction Maiden Fillies' Stakes, while Regency Art (8-1) ran out a ready winner of the Gumley Claiming Stakes for trainer David Nicholls and jockey Joe Fanning.
