Becher beckons for Mad Max

Mad Max will have his first run for Neil Mulholland in the Betfred Becher Chase at Aintree on December 3.

Formerly with Nicky Henderson, the nine-year-old has shown some top-class form in the past, winning a Grade Two novice chase at Aintree and finishing third in the Victor Chandler Chase last season.

But, at his owner’s behest, he is now set for a huge step up in trip, with the John Smith’s Grand National the long-term aim.

ā€œHe’ll just go straight for the Becher Chase as we’ve had to do a couple of things with his wind, which has been well documented,ā€ said Mulholland.

ā€œWe’d rather have him right on the day than run him just for the sake of a prep race.

ā€œHe’s in good form. I don’t know what he’s been like at home in the past but he’s very enthusiastic and he’s settled in very well and seems well in himself.

ā€œThe owners want to go for the National.

ā€œWe know he has got loads of ability – it’s whether he can stay that far.

ā€œI hope it’s a good decision. We’ll know in December.ā€
