French raider Dunaden enhanced his Emirates Melbourne Cup claims with victory in the Centrebet Geelong Cup.

The Mikel Delzangles-trained five-year-old won with a fair bit in hand from Tanby and Luca Cumani’s Bauer, the latter flashing home from the rear in a performance which earned him a spot in the big race on November 1.

Dunaden had last been seen finishing well beaten behind Mark Johnston’s Melbourne hope Jukebox Jury in the Prix Kergolay at Deauville in August.

Winning jockey Craig Williams is set to keep the ride and told the Herald Sun: “It wasn’t the strongest year for the Geelong Cup, but I was pretty happy with how he did it.”

The Geelong has proved a key pointer to the Melbourne Cup, with the double achieved last year by Alain de Royer-Dupre’s Americain and also in 2002 by Dermot Weld’s Media Puzzle.
