Monster jackpot won at Newmarket

A succession of short-priced winners meant that a record totejackpot pool was shared out at Newmarket.

The kitty swelled to a massive £2,921,589.27 – another best – after £1,659,437.49 was staked on the day to add to a rollover of £1,262,152.

With the longest-priced winner being 5-1 and two favourites and one joint market leader on target the dividend to a £1 unit was £16,610.50 meant there were £124.88 worth of winning tickets.

Alsindi took the first race at odds of 5-1 and that set the tone as punters took advantage of the fancied horses winning to land the bet.

A total of 640.02 tickets were left in the bet heading into the final leg and Mahbooba’s victory at 3-1 knocked out all bar the eventual 124 winners.

The total pool is the biggest in the history of the bet and surpassed the previous largest of £2,308,852 at Haydock in August 2010.

The final dividend compared favourably with the equivalent starting-price accumulator for the six winners which was 8,100-1.

“Congratulations to all the successful totejackpot punters who have landed a tidy sum for their efforts,” said totepool spokesman George Primarolo.

“The winners ranged from a £1 bet in a Betfred shop in Ipswich to several big syndicates off-course which just goes to show that the bet appeals to both small and big-staking punters alike.”

The record totejackpot dividend came in March when heating engineer Steve Whiteley landed £1,445,671 at Exeter having staked just £2 on the bet.
