Deacon Blues tops Wokingham possibles
Wokingham winner Deacon Blues is among a monster entry of 136 for the Blue Square Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood on July 30.
James Fanshawe also has another strong fancy for the in the shape of Mac’s Power and that pair, along with Mick Easterby’s Hoof It, have been installed as 10-1 co-favourites by the sponsors.
Easterby also has a strong contender in the shape of the improving Ancient Cross, who won the Gosforth Park Cup at Newcastle last week.
David Nicholls is always a man to be feared in big sprints and has the likes of Evens And Odds, Joseph Henry, Victoire De Lyphar and Tax Free in the six-furlong charge.
George Baker has entered Humidor but admits he could do with picking up a penalty to ensure he gets into the race .
“The Stewards’ Cup is definitely a possible target for Humidor,” said Baker.
“He will go to Sandown on Saturday for the Group Three sprint and if all was to go well there, I am sure we will have to think about Goodwood. He has won on his two previous starts there so he obviously likes the course.
“We ideally need to rise a few pounds to have a chance of making the final line-up for the Stewards’ Cup, so if he were to run well at Sandown on Saturday, we can hopefully sneak up a bit in the ratings.
“If he was to miss out on the Stewards’ Cup, then the consolation Stewards’ Sprint Handicap is another race to consider.”
The likes of Pastoral Player, Hawkeyethenoo, and Edinburgh Knight are also in the mix.
