O'Brien delays Derby decision

Aidan O’Brien is unlikely to confirm his team for the Investec Derby for at least a week.

The Ballydoyle trainer still has eight horses in the premier Classic at Epsom on June 4, headed by Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial winner Recital and Dante Stakes second Seville.

“They all seem to be fine after their last run. I haven’t done much, but everything has gone well so far,” he said.

“During the week I’ll imagine we’ll look at it.

“They have work to do this week and early next week.

“Obviously it will be discussed on a daily basis from now until then.”

Roderic O’Connor staked his claim for a Derby nomination with an all-the-way win in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh on Saturday.

“The plan was either to go to France or Epsom after the Irish Guineas if the form came back,” added O’Brien.

“That’s going to be discussed a lot and he’s a very strong possible for either.”

Dunboyne Express’ participation in the Epsom Derby will be discussed during the week.

Kevin Prendergast blamed the fast ground for his disappointing fifth-placed finish in the Irish Guineas.

He was supplemented into the Derby at a cost of £8,000 at the second entry stage, but Prendergast will closely assess the Shamardal colt over the next few days before making a decision.

“He’s come out of the race well but the ground was very, very fast,” said the County Kildare handler.

“We just feel that he didn’t let himself down on the ground and stride out like he can. The rain came too late for him.

“He ran all right – he didn’t win, but he didn’t disgrace himself.

“I don’t know about the Derby. I’ll see how is is over the next four or five days and then we’ll decide what’s happening.”
