Guineas bid 'unlikely' for Pontenuovo

Roger Charlton is looking away from the Qipco 1000 Guineas for Pontenuovo despite her promising debut for the stable at Newbury on Saturday.

Third to Dream Ahead in the Prix Morny last year when trained in France, Pontenuovo was bought for €450,000 by owner Bjorn Nielsen and sent to Charlton’s care and finished fourth behind Rimth in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes (Fred Darling) over the weekend.

“Pontenuovo perhaps lay a little out of her ground in a slowly run race but I was pleased with her effort,” Charlton told his official website www.rogercharlton.com.

“She handled the ground but her ideal distance is likely to be six or seven furlongs in future, she is unlikely to run in the 1000 Guineas.”
