Torrens plans Grand day out

Hughies Grey booked his ticket for next month’s Ladbrokes Irish Grand National with a Grade Two victory in the Webster Cup Chase at Navan.

The seven-year-old was successful over three and a half miles in the Ulster National last time but he tackled a miler shorter trip this time.

Mervyn Torrens’ charge proved up to the task, chasing the early pace set by Made In Taipan before kicking for home.

While See U Bob emerged from the pack to throw down a late challenge, Hughies Grey had the requisite stamina to hold him off by a short head.

Whatuthink came from the clouds to finish third, just three-quarters of a length adrift at the line.

“It’s onwards and upwards for Hughies Grey from here and we’ll aim him at the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse next,” said Torrens.

“I wasn’t worried about the drop back in trip today as he had run well over two miles before. He is better going right-handed so Fairyhouse should suit him - today was my first Graded win.”
