Junior in frame for Sandown gold

Kim Muir winner Junior could lead David Pipe’s assault on the Bet365 Gold Cup Chase at Sandown on April 23.

The eight-year-old last week added a Cheltenham Festival triumph to his Royal Ascot success in 2010 and holds an entry in the John Smith’s Grand National - though he is very unlikely to make the cut at Aintree.

“He’s been a real money-spinner, a good-looking horse and has got a lot of talent with it as well,” the Nicholashayne trainer told At The Races.

“The plan had been to go for the Kim Muir for a long time and it all worked out very well.

“He’s gone up 19lb for that. He’s still in the Grand National but it looks like he won’t get in.

“He’s got an entry in the Bet365 and will probably have one in the Scottish National.

“We’ll have a chat with his owners and decide where we go.”

Faasel, who was second to Junior, and Midlands National winner Minella Four Star are other Bet365 possibles for the Pipe team.

“Lots will depend on the top weights,” added Pipe.

“If Kauto Star and What A Friend come out, the weights will go up a lot and that would bring into the race – Minella Four Star as well as Gentle Ranger down the bottom as well – so we have got quite a few options for that race.

“They will also have entries in the Scottish National as well.

“Madison Du Berlais has lot his way a bit and, with this drying ground, it’s probably unlikely he’ll run again this season.”
