Snow claims Leicester and Market Rasen cards

Thursday’s National Hunt fixture at Leicester is the latest to be abandoned.

Thursday’s National Hunt fixture at Leicester is the latest to be abandoned.

Officials called an inspection for 10am but having seen no improvement in the conditions overnight, the decision was an easy one.

The course is currently covered in frost and snow with no prospect of a thaw.

Clerk of the course Jimmy Stevenson said: "We inspected at 10am but nothing has changed since yesterday.

“The temperatures are not rising. It’s zero now and might go to 1C but tomorrow it might not make it that high.

“We’ve got two inches of snow on the track and frost underneath in some areas. It’s not going to shift.”

Meanwhile, Market Rasen have been forced to abandon their National Hunt fixture on Thursday.

Track officials called an inspection for 10am but their decision was fairly straightforward.

With plenty of snow still on the track and more forecast, clerk of the course Sulekha Varma called off the meeting.

“We’ve still got five inches of snow on the track,” she said. “It is still snowing now, there is more forecast and it is drifting. Basically, it was an easy decision and we thought we’d let everyone know early.”
