McCain ace over the worst
Donald McCain’s Overturn is reported to be recovering well after finishing very tired in the totesport Ebor at York on Wednesday.
The Northumberland Plate and Galway Hurdle hero employed his customary front-running tactics in the famous Knavesmire handicap before dropping away dramatically from the turn for home to finish last of 20.
Connections were concerned about the horse’s welfare in the immediate aftermath but his trainer is pleased to report he is now heading home after a night at the track.
“The vets took him to the stables after racing and put him on a drip to get some fluids into him and he recovered very quickly,” McCain told At The Races.
“He’s on his way home now. He’s a good horse and I didn’t want to abuse him.
“I was a bit conscious about running him but at the time it seemed the right thing to do.
“Obviously it wasn’t, but you live and learn. I don’t know if it was one run too many or whether the whole occasion just got to him.
“There were some worrying moments afterwards but he’s OK now and he’ll have a nice break before coming back over hurdles.”
