Sleek Saamidd enters Guineas mix

Godolphin’s Saamidd made a most impressive racecourse debut at Newbury as he streaked seven lengths clear of the field.

From the family of Barathea and Gossamer, Saamidd was sent off at 11-4 in what looked a decent gathering for division one of the Don Deadman Memorial EBF Maiden Stakes but he showed a devastating turn of foot following a little squeeze from Frankie Dettori.

Totesport and Sky Bet were impressed enough to introduce the colt at 20-1 for next year’s 2000 Guineas.

“He came here with a big reputation and he didn’t let me down,” said Dettori.

“He gave me a good feel. I don’t know what he beat but he did it in style.”

Division two went to another choicely-bred newcomer, the John Gosden-trained Treasury Devil (9-4).

The son of Crystal Music has already been given some high-profile entries and will have done little to dissuade connections after William Buick surged to the front with a couple of furlongs to run.

The jockey and trainer combination then struck in the Punter Southall Transaction Services Handicap through the steadily-improving Kansai Spirit (5-1).

Ed McMahon’s Electric Waves (10-1) collected the Listed Bathwick Tyres St Hugh’s Stakes, to follow on from the valuable success of stablemate Temple Meads in last month’s Weatherbys Super Sprint over the same five furlongs.

On the same afternoon as the Super Sprint, this particular chestnut landed a nursery at Haydock and the rain-softened ground saw her in an even better light here.

Electric Waves and Richard Mullen put the event to bed at the furlong pole and she was good value for her length and a quarter superiority over Sweet Cecily.

McMahon said: “I think the ground has helped her a little.

“Coming on off a mark of 88, on paper you’d think she’d have run well if she was third or fourth, but she’s a filly that hasn’t stopped improving.

“I should think there might be some offers for her after this, so we’ll have to wait and see.”

The Ruthy Smith Memorial Maiden Fillies’ Stakes saw 6-4 favourite Dark Promise nearly justify her skinny odds but she was caught close home by Jim Crowley and Red Intrigue (9-2).

Crowley added another aboard the veteran Foxhaven (11-8 favourite) in the Christopher Smith Associates Claiming Stakes.

Desert Poppy (2-1 favourite) took the step up to six furlongs well in her stride in the M C Seafoods Handicap while Gross Prophet (8-1) cashed in the Bettor Racing Tips At bettor.com Apprentice Handicap.
