Enact has grounds for Cup reverse

Connections of Enact have blamed the rain-softened ground for the filly’s disappointing performance in last weekend’s Stewards’ Cup.

Michael Stoute’s four-year-old was sent off the 6-1 favourite for the fiercely competitive handicap under Ryan Moore, but trailed home 24th of the 28 runners.

Chris Richardson, managing director of the owners Cheveley Park Stud, said: “She just hated the ground on the day. They had that shower in the morning which just loosened the ground up too much for her.

“Ryan said coming down the hill that she was in trouble and just from watching the race it looked like the ground was even softer over on the far side.

“It’s unfortunate considering how fast the ground has been all summer, but it’s just one of those things.”
