Gallic Star takes Pontefract prize

Gallic Star struck a blow for the fillies with a narrow victory in the totepool Silver Tankard Stakes at Pontefract.

The only female in the eight-strong field for this Listed contest, Mick Channon's charge had plenty to do a furlong out but she got up in the last stride.

Her last-gasp victory denied Tominator who had made a brave attempt to make all the running.

Gallic Star (11-2) came through to pip Tominator by a short head with Namecheck a similar distance away third and Astonishment a close fourth.

"She did it well, she's a tough filly. It was good for her owners that she has now got some black type," said winning rider Chris Catlin.

"I was a bit concerned about the ground, but it was good on top and she picks up better on that sort of surface.

"She looks to have a bit of scope, she should train on and go on next year."

This was another big win for the Channon team after they struck Grade One glory with Lahaleeb in the E P Taylor Stakes in Canada on Saturday night.

As for Catlin, victory on Gallic Star was his 110th of the year.

"Things have gone pretty well. All races are harder to come by these days and hopefully there are a few more to come," he added.
