Jim Goldie is “very tempted” to let Nanton take his chance in the second leg of the Autumn Double – the totesport.com Cesarewitch at Newmarket on Saturday week.

The Mallard Stakes winner finished a staying on third in the first leg of the double – the Cambridgeshire – last weekend when he fared by far and away the best of those drawn low.

The seven-year-old was beaten just over a length, and Goldie is keen to run again so long as the rains stays away in the build-up to the marathon two-mile-two-furlong event.

Goldie said: “He came out of the Cambridgeshire well but I haven’t yet decided whether he runs in the Cesarewitch.

“If the ground remains on the fast side I’d be very tempted as he is very good on quick ground.

“I was delighted with him at the weekend given where he was drawn. Nothing from his side of the draw was anywhere near apart from him.

“The trip will be an unknown. He improved for the step up to a mile and a quarter to a mile and six, so he could improve again for going further.

“It is a possible as he switches off during his races, but we won’t know unless we try.”
