Smart Ed Dunlop inmate Aqwaal has put down after suffering a serious injury on the gallops.

The three-year-old won his first two outings of the campaign in impressive style before finishing fifth in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He was not beaten far into sixth in a competitive handicap at Newmarket last time and connections are understandably disappointed.

Angus Gold, racing manager to owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, said: "Sadly we have lost Aqwaal as he smashed a knee so badly they couldn't mend it.

"It's obviously very disappointing as we had high hopes for him."
