Tropical Treat in the mix for Lowther Stakes

Tropical Treat has the Lowther Stakes at York next month on the horizon after making a winning debut in the EBF sportingbet.com Maiden Stakes at Windsor.

Although her task was made easier with the withdrawal of market rival Wellington Fair, the Bahamian Bounty juvenile proved a cut above under Seb Sanders and only needed to be pushed out to collect at odds of 4-1.

Her owner Jeff Smith has four horses in training with Ralph Beckett, and knows a thing or two about speedy fillies with former champion sprinter Loch Song having carried his purple silks to numerous top-class victories during the 1990s.

Beckett said: "That is my first winner for Mr Smith, which is very satisfying, and she is a nice filly.

"She showed a bit in the spring but had an accident and all sorts of problems came along.

"I wouldn't have put her in the Lowther if I didn't think a lot of her, and we will see how we go."

Bill Ratcliffe is well on course to beat his 2008 total of 10 winners, with Colorus (9-1) bringing his total for this campaign to seven in the sportingbet.com Apprentice Handicap.

Ratcliffe only recently moved from Middleham to Newmarket, and he helped maintain jockey Josephine Bruning's faultless strike-rate at the Thameside track as she took her tally to two wins from two rides.

Ratcliffe said: "Since I moved to our new yard in April we have had seven winners. We had 10 last year and the target is to beat that."

Frankie Dettori made the trip from Newmarket for his one ride worthwhile as Godolphin's Buzzword proved plenty good enough as the 8-11 favourite in the sportingbet.com Maiden Stakes.

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor commented: "He has improved for his first race when he needed the experience and was green.

"He was more focused and showed a nice turn of foot.

"He will stay further than six furlongs and we will try and find a better race for him."
