Cliffs has Deauville date

The Prix Morny at Deauville looks set to be the next port of call for Canford Cliffs following his devastating performance in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Richard Hannon’s juvenile, a seven-length winner on his debut at Newbury, justified plenty of stable confidence when routing his rivals by six lengths and more in Tuesday’s Group Two contest.

With a tilt at the July Stakes at Newmarket next month now looking unlikely, a trip across the channel for Deauville’s Group One on August 23 looks his most likely destination.

“Canford Cliffs would have a 3lb penalty for the July Stakes, and, in any event, I want to run Angel’s Pursuit at Newmarket as he never got the breaks in the Windsor Castle and is a lot better than he looked at the Royal meeting,” said Hannon.

“Canford Cliffs is not entered in the Phoenix Stakes and it would cost €25,000 to supplement him for the Curragh, so the Deauville race, which has not yet closed, looks the favoured option.

“I know it is two months away, but the break will do him good."
