Godolphin master Italian job

Godolphin claimed a welcome Classic success as Mastery made a triumphant debut for his new connections in the Derby Italiano at Rome's Cappenelle racecourse.

The Sulamani colt was a winner for Mark Johnston as a juvenile but switched to the care of Saeed bin Suroor following his fourth place in Kempton's Kentucky Derby Trial in March.

Mastery made the best possible start for the team, racing well in contention for Frankie Dettori coming into the final furlong.

Things may have been different had local runner Jakkalberry not jinked into the rail in the closing stages of the one-mile-three-furlong heat, from where Mastery went on to win with a deal of authority.

Bin Suroor said: "Mastery has run a big race to win.

"It was a tough contest on fast ground but he did it really well. I talked to Frankie Dettori before the race and asked him to keep the colt close to the leaders.

"We are looking at the English Derby next month for Mastery but will consult with Sheikh Mohammed before making a final decision," he told www.godolphin.com.
