Maughan crowned star employee

David Elsworth's travelling head lad Peter Maughan has been named as Employee of the Year at the fifth annual Stud and Stable Staff Awards.

David Elsworth's travelling head lad Peter Maughan has been named as Employee of the Year at the fifth annual Stud and Stable Staff Awards.

Former jockey Mick Fitzgerald presented a cheque for £25,000 (€28,274), half of which for goes to his colleagues at his Newmarket stables and the other half for Maughan himself, who has worked in racing for 56 years and also won the Senior Staff category.

Award sponsors Godolphin gave a £3,000 (€3,393) individual prize to each category winner.

David Nicholson Newcomer was Lee Oswin, while Stud Staff winner was Usk Valley's Paul Baker.

Claire Knight received the Rider/Groom prize for her work for Jeremy Noseda, with the Special Merit/Hero gong given to Stuart Williams' yard man Andy Gibson.

British Horseracing Authority chief executive Nic Coward said: "These inspiring awards are an important date in the racing calendar as they provide a moment for the sport to celebrate those hard working, dedicated, talented people - without whom the show wouldn't get on the road."
